Here’s an idea: Revolving equity-based full ride scholarships – Michigan can apply the equity-logic of the 21st Century Jobs Fund to entrepreneurship education by providing a revolving equity-based full ride scholarship to any student enrolled in a nationally accredited entrepreneurship Minor or Major at a Michigan university or college. In essence, the state gets equity in the ventures launched by the students who receive the scholarships, after they graduate. If their venture(s) succeed, the state wins, if not, the equity-based investment reverts to a grant (and the student simply becomes a valuable employee in a firm seeking to use entrepreneurship to diversify and grow).

As an alumnus of Central Michigan University that majored in Entrepreneurship I can personally attest to the benefits of taking courses in that field. At the time I believed that I wouldn’t utilize the knowledge and skills I developed until later in my life. However, I’m utilizing those skills much earlier than I ever expected. Unable to find steady work I decided to take things into my own hands. I am in the initial stages of starting my own political website. ThePragmaticCenter.com will be a research based blog that allows contributors across the country to submit research and analysis of reforms, policies, and ideas that could help our communities and country succeed in the 21st Century. The target market is political independents and moderates who believe that ideology and partisanship are blinding our political leaders from common sense solutions. ThePragmaticCenter.com will be launched by April 1st, 2010. I would not be able to follow my dream of creating this website or have much opportunity to succeed if I had not studied Entrepreneurship. It is a great subject to study and I couldn’t agree more with Jo Mathis that it is also a great benefit to our state the more universities offer entrepreneurship courses.
