SPECIAL ALERT: Reform coalition asks Senate to take up bill that may prevent $40-50 million in new prison costs during budget meltdown

Today, the Center for Michigan joined with statewide business organizations and other groups in calling on the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee to take action on a bill that could save $40-50 million per year in prison costs.

The bill at issue would keep open a prison boot camp near Chelsea. The boot camp is slated to close if the Senate does not vote to remove a sunset on the camp by September 30. State analysts project the camp closure would require moving camp inmates into more expensive prison settings. Total projected costs: 1,600 annual prison beds to the tune of $40-50 million more per year at a time when nearly every recipient of state general fund spending is subject to large-scale budget cuts.

The corrections coalition has respectfully requested that the Senate Judiciary Committee take action on the bill or explain why the SAI/boot camp should close.
