New jobs down on the farm

For one very large sector of Michigan’s economy, 2008 was a fantastic year.

Agriculture “is a sector ripe with opportunity for business expansion, job growth, and is a driving force in our economic health,” Michigan Department of Agriculture Director Don Koivisto says in a new report.

The report suggests Agriculture is significantly outpacing much of the rest of the state economy. Agriculture is poised to add more than 10,000 jobs annually and grow by $1 billion over the next few years. Already it is a $64 billion industry employing a quarter of working Michiganians.

How many tons of pesticide are used on Michigan crops?
How long before the pesticides render our soil sterile? What is the health condition of the people working and living near these crops?
