Other considerations of teacher merit pay:

  • PRESIDENT OBAMA BACKED THE CONCEPT EARLIER THIS YEAR: “Too many supporters of my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom,” the president said in March.
  • TRANSFORMING TEACHER COMPENSATION: Two years ago, a Brookings Institution study recommended overhauling how we pay educators. Findings included: 1) Little evidence between teacher quality and time of tenure; 2) Little evidence that advanced degrees result in better teachers; 3) Little evidence that teacher certification results in better teachers; and 4) Recommendations of higher pay for math teachers and teachers in poverty-wracked districts.
