One key to Michigan’s future prosperity is to develop a culture of being “welcoming to all,” as Lou Glazer and his group Michigan Future have consistently suggested. New Census numbers show Michigan is steadily becoming more multicultural. Since 2000, the state has gained more than 150,000 people, with specific gains in African-American, Hispanic, Native American and multi-racial residents. The numbers also show Wayne County has lost more residents than any other county in the nation since 2000 except hurricane-battered Orleans Parish. Scan the statewide Census figures (xls) or read ace demographer Kurt Metzger’s Metro Detroit analysis (doc).
