Michigan by Matthew Dagher-Margosian

Sometimes we look at cars differently
Like two friends after school fighting
When one of them bought a Toyota
We get thrilled every time we turn a key
This was made here,
With fire
And pride

Sometimes we fight at bars
Over how
Our sports teams are better than yours
Sometimes you bring up the Lions
Sometimes we know when to shut our mouths in sports bars

Sometimes we’re silent
Drinking in
A loon’s wail
A wolf’s howl
A geese’s honk
The sound of dunes
Sand holding itself and turning constantly
Like lovers sleeping in

Sometimes we embrace
What others fear
Because we know that sometimes the
Women in veils
Make the best bread in Dearborn
And the men in Timberlands and Fro Picks
Sometimes
Spin the best records

Sometimes we’re proud of our native sons and daughters
For picking up a microphone
And snarling
Or rapping
or belting out a tune that will always have a use
Like making a busted tire into a swing
For Garage Rock, and Hip Hop and Motown
We can always find you when we need too.

And sometimes we forget
Why we live here
Tires grind us under
Cold weather
Exhaust from our industries
Makes us cough in angry fashion
And then there are the Lions
And Darko

But we always seem to remember
On the days where we have nothing to do
But
Listen
And wait
For inspiration.
