The Michigan Promise, the state’s revamped Merit Award college tuition scholarship, is a beefed-up version of its former self, offering up to $4,000 for college. It’s still no Kalamazoo Promise.
But should it be?
Last week, the Center for Michigan held a statewide town hall meeting at Western Michigan University for those interested in The Kalamazoo Promise and who want to export it to other communities.
The discussion also included the issue of whether there should be a real Michigan Promise — one that picks up the college tuition tab for at least the first two years. That would create, in effect, a statewide K-14 free public education system.
