Whispers about big government consolidation plans in West Michigan grew louder this week when WZZM television featured a long segment on talks between Grand Rapids and surrounding cities to consolidate police, fire, public works, and other services.
The suggestion: mayors and city managers are on the verge of a major breakthrough — the formation of a metropolitan authority to deliver essential services while reducing overhead and overlap beyond individual municipal borders.

As the Center for Michigan has repeatedly noted in past reports, West Michigan has long been in the forefront of government cooperation efforts across the state. But West Michigan leaders have also long complained of hurdles caused by decades-old state laws that limit the amount of service combination and savings possible across borders. If West Michigan leaders can solve that jigsaw puzzle, it could be breakthrough worthy of adoption elsewhere.
