Why Journalists Leave Newsrooms

Publicly minded organizations, be they state agencies, non-profits, public relations agencies, or other groups with an eye on Lansing and the state's future, are thick with former newspaper reporters and editors. There was a time, not so long ago, when newspapering was considered "A life of kings." Why have so many left newsrooms? David Simon, creator of the true-to-life HBO drama "The Wire" explains in this gritty and passionate Esquire Magazine obitiuary for newspaper reporting -- a craft that is fading at the precise moment it is needed most in this frayed democracy.

While Simon writes about the Baltimore Sun, the same troubling forces are at work in newsrooms through Michigan.
