We are sad to report the passing of a leading voice in Michigan's transformation but happy to report a victorious career milestone for another.

A diverse group of more than 100 statewide leaders came together a year and a half ago to launch the Michigan's Defining Moment Public Engagement Campaign. Two of the influential voices at the table were Kevin Kelly, executive director of the Michigan State Medical Society, and Kurt Kimball, city manager in Grand Rapids.

Kelly passed away this week after a lengthy illness. It is a deep loss for Michigan, but don't take my word for it. Instead, read the many tributes posted here on Dome Magazine. As Dome wrote:

"Kevin A. Kelly was a leader in health care in Michigan, serving the Michigan State Medical Society his entire career. Just as important, he was involved in the good works of countless organizations and the good deeds of so many individuals. He urged them, led them and helped them to do more and better for the benefit of others."

Michigan needs so many more Kevin Kellys.

The state could use more Kurt Kimballs, too.

In an era of constant budget cuts and intense local politics, it is rare for a city manager to last more than a few years in any one place. Kurt Kimball has served as city manager in Grand Rapids for 22 years. The city will extend tribute to his service with a special celebration in January.

"I have literally devoted my professional career to this City," Kimball told the Grand Rapids Press. "In my years in this job, I have personally witnessed its metamorphosis from a proud, but relatively insular, mid-sized Midwestern city to a modern, economically diverse and pulsating premier city that is fast becoming world-class in every respect."

There's no doubt about that.

We hope to convince Kurt to continue to work with Michigan's Defining Moment on positive change in Lansing. Given his track record, we don't' think it will be very hard to convince him.
