Taking A Flyer On Transit

By The Center for Michigan - August 10, 2007

Who knows if Southeast Michigan will ever come up with a 21st Century mass transit system. Meantime, a company called Michigan Flyer is carving out a mass transit niche. Since launching last November, Michigan Flyer (powerpoint) has built daily ridership of 220 people for its fleet of luxury coaches that travel from East Lansing and Jackson to Detroit Metro Airport. The attraction: fares that beat the cost of drive-and-park and wifi Internet service that allows business travelers to work while they commute. The company is seeking to expand with hourly service from Ann Arbor to Romulus. "We've been overwhelmed with how warmly we've been embraced," says Michigan Flyer Vice President Ody Norkin.
