The federal government has a huge impact on the Michigan economy. Some $65 billion in federal funds flowed into Michgian in 2005, as a new analysis by the Citizens Research Council of Michigan shows.
The money covers everything from the salaries of postal carriers to funds to rebuild roads and bridges.
But Michigan doesn't get its fair share of the federal pie.
Michigan ranks a woeful 43rd out of 50 in federal expenses per capita. Had our federal spending equaled our population, $13 billion more would have flowed into the Michigan economy in 2005.
So, set aside concern about voter representation in this year's Michigan presidential primary. Money talks. Federal spending speaks volumes. Michigan doesn't have clout.
