Seasons in Michigan by Danielle Wurth

By The Center for Michigan - February 26, 2008

I've lived in Michigan my entire life and still cannot decide my favorite time of the year. Whenever I think I've finally narrowed it down and picked out my favorite season, I remember the beautiful colors the leaves turn in the fall, the way the birds sing in the springtime, and the way the whole world turns white during the winter. Each season in Michigan has its own distinct characteristics that make it unique and wonderful.

Autumn in Michigan is unbelievable. The air begins to turn cool and crisp as birds begin to fly south for the winter and the green disappears from the tree tops. The leaves turn stunning shades of orange, red, and brown, but the beauty of nature is only part of fall in Michigan. Fall is football season. From huddling together with my classmates in the stands of my high school to cheering for the Wolverines in Big House, fall means football. Walking home late at night from these games, hearing the crunch of leaves under your feet brings a feeling that nothing could replace.

After all the leaves have fallen off the trees and the first snowflakes land on the ground, you know winter has arrived. Even though driving through a blizzard is one of the worst experiences I've ever had, I still love the snow. The way it floats from the sky and coats everything in a blanket of white is incredible. The tree branches covered in a sheet of white is one of the most beautiful images one could ever encounter. Winter also brings hundreds of skiers and snowboarders to the slopes. Michigan does not have huge ski resorts like Vail or Aspen but the hills we have here are good enough for me. Flying down the side of the hill with the wind in your face is an experience that words cannot even describe.

When the snow has melted and the birds begin singing, spring has officially arrived in Michigan. Springtime revives life in Michigan. The grass turns green after being covered all winter by the snow, animals come to life after being dormant for months, and the days begin to grow longer. Flowers begin to blossom, bringing color and vibrancy after the grayness of winter. Baby animals are born and new life is brought into the world. Spring also brings the beginning of baseball season. The Detroit Tigers head to Spring Training each year as they embark on a journey towards the World Series. They too are given new life each spring. In addition, spring means that the school year is coming to an end. This by itself makes spring a great season.

As the weather heats up and the sun doesn't set until late at night, you know that summer is upon us. Summer brings sunshine and sunglasses along with bathing suits and tan lines. My favorite part of the summer, besides playing baseball, is traveling up to my family's cottage. We have a little place on a lake, far enough away from the big cities but still close enough that we can get there within a few hours drive. New memories are made each day as we splash around in the water, build sandcastles on the beach, and water-ski behind our speed boat. Watching the sun set each night over the water creates a breathtaking image not even an artist could try to capture. The colors in the sky, blue, purple, pink, and red, all blending together and the reflection of those colors in the lake is strikingly beautiful. Summer nights in Michigan bring as much fun as the days. Some of the greatest times come as we sit around the bonfire for hours roasting s'mores, taking breaks every now and then to play flashlight tag. Summers in Michigan bring never ending fun and pleasure.

Each season in Michigan is unique and magnificent, making it almost impossible to choose a favorite. I love the hot temperatures of the summer and the snow in the winter, and with Michigan weather, it's possible to get them both in the same week. Every season is different in its own way, and there is no where else I would want to call home.
