Reform: Candidates Embrace MDM

By John Bebow - June 20, 2008

The hard work of 1,800 statewide residents who came together in the past year to develop "Michigan's Defining Moment: A Common Ground Agenda for Michigan's Transformation" is reaching the desks of the hundreds of candidates running this year for seats in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Here's some of their early feedback:

  • Ed Mulka, a Democrat from Taylor running in the 22nd District, called and said: "I just received your blue book in the mail this morning. I thought I was alone on a lot of issues. I'm looking at this book and I almost want to cry! I'm just flabbergasted at what you've put together and I'm calling to see if I can use this in my campaign."
  • Doug Curry, a Republican from South Lyon running in the 38th District, attended the MDM One-Year-Celebration in May, grabbed some copies of the MDM report, and declared it his campaign agenda.
  • Judy Truesdell, a Democrat from Niles running in the 78th District called and said the MDM report was "marvelous." She ordered 10 copies to pass out to her campaign staff.
  • Bill Galligan, a Republican from Saugatuck running in the 88th District, emailed and said, "In researching issues on the state level, I had come across your web site. As a result, I have already run off copies of your summary pages and given them to my campaign staff. I applaud your work and your goals and hope, should I be fortunate enough to represent Allegan County in the house, that I can be instrumental in helping you acheive those goals."
  • Inspired by Mr. Galligan's email handle ("galliganforallegan"), Public Sector Consultants Vice President and MDM Project Manager Peter Pratt harkened back to his own political career: "The guy is fated to win--reminds me of my opponent in elementary school, whose motto was 'I swam the ocean to vote for Godoshian.' Unfortunately, I'm not Armenian and was clobbered."

Final clarification... Mention of these candidates in this newsletter should not imply endorsement. The Center for Michigan and the MDM Campaign are in the business of spreading dialogue about the issues, not endorsing particular candidates. But there's nothing preventing individual candidates from endorsing MDM.

Shoot us a note if you'd like to be involved as we work to hold small- and large-audience conversations with candidates in the 46 House campaigns in which no incumbent is running.
