My Michigan by Lynn Yackley

By The Center for Michigan - January 2, 2008

When my boys were eleven and ten years old, our family took a vacation through the lower part of Michigan and into the Upper Peninsula.  We went to Traverse City, Mackinac Island and then up into the UP to White Fish Bay, Tahquamenon Falls, Munising and then back down to Silver Lake and the Sand Dunes and then finally to Michigan Adventure Theme Park- what a week it was!!!!We had an amazing time visiting these places. The highlights were riding the dunes with Mac Woods, dad getting stuck at the top of a roller coaster at Michigan Adventure and having to WALK DOWN the roller coaster as his nervous family watched. We saw a moose grazing by the side of the road and got out of the car to take many pictures of it. We were deeply touched and saddened by the memorial at White Fish Bay to the Edmund Fitzgerald.  The pictures of the crew were so moving. Staring out at Lake Superior was amazing.  Mackinac Island was so much fun- the fort, the fudge and the carriage ride.

We are so very lucky to live in such a beautiful state. The waterfalls, the colors, the rich history and all the lakes make this a truly wonderful place to live and work. Because we had such a nice vacation, the following year we went back and rented a cottage on a lake in Munising and relaxed, fished and watched the sunset on Lake Superior- another fantastic week in Michigan! I cannot imagine living anywhere else but our great state!!!
