Mid-Michigan Innovation

By John Bebow - June 6, 2008

A little company you've never heard of made a big leap this week.

Bordener Engineered Services in Midland makes chip- and stain-resistant surface materials for countertops, furniture, walls, and other uses. Bordener just became the first "graduate" to move out of new-company incubator space created by the Mid-Michigan Innovation Center.

An idea that hatched in 2001, the Mid-Michigan Innovation Center now hosts 16 local entrepreneurial companies and provides office space, secretarial support, and telecommunications support. With support of just under $1 million from area foundations, the the innovation center so far lays claim to 58 new jobs created in the Midland area and $4.3 million in new payroll.

Regional efforts like the Mid-Michigan Innovation Center are what Michigan's Defining Moment Public Engagement Campaign participants envisioned when they issued a call to grow Michigan's entrepreneurial culture.

Way to go, Midland!
