Michigan: A Great Place to Raise an Active Family by Kristen McLane

By The Center for Michigan - January 14, 2008

For the past four and a half years I have been proud to call Michigan
my home.  I live in a fabulous community called the Village of Romeo.
It is located in Macomb County in the southeastern part of Michigan.
Romeo is a historic community founded in the early 1800's; many of the
original Victorian homes still grace the village.  My home in
particular was built in 1891.

As the mother of two young children I appreciate the abundance of
outdoor recreational opportunities.  Raising an active family is one
of my goals as a parent.  As a resident of Michigan I am able to meet
that goal.  Here are some of the ways:

1) I am fortunate to live a short driving distance away from Stoney
Creek, one of Michigan's thirteen metroparks.  Our favorite family
activities at Stoney Creek are walking the nature trails and swimming
in the lake.

2) My personal favorite outdoor spot is the Macomb Orchard Trail.  The
Macomb Orchard Trial is a bicycle and walking path that as of now far
covers 23.5 miles of abandoned railroad.  I love that I can get on my
bike at my house and within five minutes be on a paved trail where
there are an abundance of wildflowers, bunnies, birds, butterflies and
deer along the path.

3) There are also many parks in my community.  A new park was built at
the end of my street just months after moving into the neighborhood.
The park was a "community-build" where residents came together over
the course of a weekend and built the park.  My kids and I go to the
park almost daily from spring to fall.  We even go in the winter if
the sun is shining.

There is a special quality of life available to those living in
Michigan.  I'm glad to see that outdoor areas are being protected and
invested in.  I feel great about raising my family here.
