Looking for a Change by Holly Louwers

By The Center for Michigan - February 12, 2008

What do I love about Michigan? I would say that I love the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. They are absolutely beautiful. My family and their friends have been going to the dunes for about 25 years. It has become a tradition that we go there every year the week of the 4th of July. We go to the off road part of the park because everyone in our little group has a jeep. We love playing in the mud, watching races down at the drag strip, and going down to the beach. One of the coolest parts about them is when you walk over all the dunes down to Silver Lake. It takes forever and your legs feel like they are going to fall off, but once you get to the other side, it was definitely worth it. The view is amazing. Your above the tree tops and you can see for miles. It is just so cool.

My best vision for Michigan's future is to get away from the automobile industry. It is nothing but a roller coaster ride. It goes up slowly, and then drastically falls. We need to focus on something that does not cost more to make than the profit we are bringing in for it. Let's be honest here, no one in Michigan has money right now. The economy is bad. We cannot afford to buy brand new vehicles. I believe we should invest more into tourism. Michigan has a lot of beautiful sites to be seen. We could bring a lot of money to this state by having people from other more economically stable states come here on vacation.

There are many things I would like to change about Michigan. First, I believe that the college tuition prices need to go down, quit a bit. when i think of college, I do not think of how fun it will be or what my classes will be like. I think "How am I going to afford this!" Yes, I know there is financial aid and scholarships like the one I am writing right now, but some people are not fortunate enough to get that help they need. I will be attending Ferris State University in the fall for nursing and for my bachelor's degree it will cost me close to 40,000 dollars. That does not include the cost of books or living expenses. That just screams "debt".
The last thing I would love Michigan to change is Welfare. We need stricter guidelines on welfare. I mean strict. I hate going to work knowing that a part of my paycheck is going to people who really don't need it. I can count on one hand, people that I know abuse the system, and on my other hand, people who really need help and no matter how hard they try they cannot even get a dime. I personally know someone who cannot work because their back is in very bad shape. If they were to twist the wrong way they could be paralyzed. This person has six doctors signatures  saying that  they cannot work and has had  their case heard numerous times and they still cannot receive any aid. And then you get Joe from down the street who cannot work because they have a "very mild" case of arthritis, and without a blink of an eye they get help. People with cerebral palsy still go to work. The man who does my taxes is paralyzed from the waist down and he still works because he said "I can function fine, other people need it more than I do." It is so sad to see people bust their butt's to make it, while other's cruise by on government funding when they do not deserve it.
