It's the Hand by Mara Richardson

By The Center for Michigan - December 18, 2007

To me, Michigan is everything I am and everything I will be.

I have so many memories of long, beautiful rides up north. Including a time this summer when my husband and I saw a black bear running across I-75. The up north trips are endless in my mind and will always have a place in my heart.

At the same time, Michigan also has a wonderful, growing downtown Detroit. Quite a contrary from Petosky, I might saw. But there are so many great, happening things to do in the city. I can't even begin to tell you all the wild nights I've had down there.

The trees, the lights, the fact that you can see the stars in most towns. It's all within the wonderful state of Michigan.

Most of all I love it that every single person from Michigan can show others a location by pointing to a spot on the palm of their hand.

there's an old Armenian saying. that birds fly south in winter. apparently the same is not true for poets. it is wonderful to have muses exist during our colder months
