Is it any wonder the mood of Michigan voters is "more somber and negative" than at any other time in the past quarter century?
The ill-timed Michigan State Police headquarters project is one of the shiniest recent examples of how our leaders in Lansing continually find new ways to strain their relations with the public.
Set aside for a moment some of WXYZ Channel 7's more sensational claims of cronyism and chicanery. Spending a single new dime to erect a gleaming new state-leased building when the governor and legislature couldn't pass a budget for more than seven months is beyond explanation to the average voter. Channel 7 argued quite convincingly that the state cops could make do just fine with existing facilities. Here is the Granholm Administration's response.
We'll file this one in our "out of touch" folder, next to the reports on public pension manager trips to Hawaii and legislators' Lake Michigan fishing trip while the budget mess intensified.
