Politics doesn't abhor a vacuum nearly as much as nature does, which explains why there's no rush to fill the absolute absence of leadership in Lansing.
The state's dysfunction is the fault of politicians who lack courage, vision and competence. Michigan faces its most critical crisis led by the most uninspired governor in its modern history and the greenest and most stubbornly partisan Legislature.
Phil Power is among many who have seen enough. "I'm not going to sit around watching the sand slip through my toes while my state goes to hell," says the retired newspaper publisher from Ann Arbor.
"My frustration finally peaked during the budget talks, when I saw Michigan in trouble and nothing that will work got done."
Instead of just fuming about the stinking mess Gov. Jennifer Granholm and lawmakers are making of state government, Power is mustering his resources to do something.

Years ago Mayor Young and I had a 1/2 hour talk about Gov. Engler's redudctions on all the entitlement programs in Michigan to the tune of millions which upset Mayor Young and he said to me I don't know about you Fred but I'm a Democrate and we are entitled to those entitlements and I said maybe your right but how do you expect to pay for them and he responded "There's only one way I know and that is to raise taxes". I said it might be one way but it's not going to be a very popular way. It seems to me nothing has changed much ever since Gov Granholm has been in we are all paying more taxes. I never thought I would ever get into politics but I guess if I want to see a change It has to start with each one of us so I'm ready to throw my hat in and see if I can make a differance. I Think Truman said it best when he said the Buck Stops here. Fred McKenzie
