State approved plans to flood the headwaters of the famous Au Sable river with discharge from an oil cleanup were derailed by an Otsego County judge earlier this summer. The judge lambasted the DEQ for shoddy oversight. After reaching a settlement and pledging to find a way to clean up contamination without impacting the Au Sable headwaters, the DEQ backed out of the deal in late July. The Traverse City Record-Eagle lambasted the DEQ's reversal: "The DEQ is supposed to be the people's advocate and watchdog. Right now it looks like we need a bit more of both."
