DEQ Gives Another Nod to U.P. Sulfide Mine

After a months-long controversy over hidden documents and questionable technical review, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has given preliminary approval to a controversial sulfide mine in the Uppper Peninsula. Environmental groups contend the mine threatens the headwaters of the Salmon Trout River, spawning grounds for coaster brook trout, and air quality in the Upper Peninsula.
