As Michigan's newly elected Legislature and governor prepare to start a new term, there's a sobering new assessment of the state's budget condition.
The nonpartisan Citizens Research Council of Michigan has charted a widening gap between state spending and revenue that will exceed $10 billion in 10 years. The council predicts that unchecked, there will be a $5.9 billion gap between spending and revenue for the state general fund, and a $4.5 billion gap in the state school aid fund.
