Coveting the Great Lakes

By John Bebow - January 31, 2008

Michigan-based journalist and big thinker Keith Schneider hears another troubling example of drought-ridden states coveting the Great Lakes and points out the contrast between Michigan's bountiful winter wetness and sinking reservoirs in so many other areas of the country.

Meantime, a fight looms over the Great Lakes Compact, the regional water agreement the Michigan Legislature may take up this year in a multi-state effort to protect the Great Lakes from water diversions.

Senate Bill 212 would ratify that compact but would also change in-state water withdrawals in ways that trouble some environmental groups.
