Polls and pundits have suggested this year that the public doesn't really feel the pain of state budget cuts. Well, they're starting to feel it this week in parts of the Upper Peninsula. As the largest Michigan wildfire in years raged on, one insight by Associated Press reporter John Flesher stood out: "The DNR's firefighting corps consists of just 81 people, an all-time low, agency spokeswoman Mary Detloff said. Some are assigned to other fires. 'We should have a minimum of 100, according to what national certifying agencies tell us,' she said."
